Combined DC Fast Charging Stations with AC Charging Stations in the Same Charging Management System

Badenova public fast-charging park

Freiburg's first ultra-fast charging park, the ecoChargingCoach, combines DC fast charging stations with AC charging stations in the same charging management system. Billing is possible via third-party providers independently of the charging management system. Additional charging stations with different wall boxes can be added as required.

Freiburg's first ultra-fast charging park with 16 charging stations goes into operation on Schreiberstrasse

Fast-charging stations at central locations are essential for a successful transition to electromobility. On 29 March, the city's first fast-charging park was opened in the heart of Freiburg, on B31/Schreiberstrasse. Freiburg's Lord Mayor Martin Horn and badenova CEO Hans-Martin Hellebrand officially opened the park at a press event.

Becoming self-sufficient thanks to a well thought-out energy concept

Freiburg to become more attractive for e-cars: The figures show that buying an electric car is becoming increasingly attractive for many people: According to Statista, around 360,000 all-electric vehicles were registered in Germany in 2021. In 2020, the figure was 195,000 - 54 per cent fewer. And January 2022 also started with a record number of new registrations: an increase of 28.1 per cent in e-cars compared to January 2021. «We are taking a big step forward with the opening of the e-charging park - precisely because the situation is so excellent,» said Mayor Martin Horn. badenova CEO Hans-Martin Hellebrand pointed out the great importance of e-mobility for the transport transition: «The boom will only continue with a good supply network of charging facilities.»

Charging park in the «heart of Freiburg» covers a broad spectrum

The badenova park on the B31/Schreiberstrasse offers six charging points with up to 400 kW ultra-fast charging power for cars, lorries, and buses as well as nine charging points with up to 22 kW normal charging power for cars. There is also a wall box for e-bikes and e-scooters. Charging times are between ten and 30 minutes, depending on the car model and battery charge level. The charging points are from the Austrian company EnerCharge. They are characterised by customer-friendly operation and simple direct debit and credit card payments.

The fast-charging park involves an investment of EUR 500,000, with EUR 130,000 from subsidies. To realise the project, badenova founded its own company with Green Power Mobility from Nordhausen: Ladepark Südbaden GmbH & Co. KG. badenova worked closely with the city of Freiburg on the final concept for the park: A good location in terms of transport strategy was a particular concern for all those involved. The charging stations will be partially covered to protect from the rain. badenova will install 54 solar modules with a total output of 20.5 kWp on the roof. The park is located on municipal land and covers an area of around 400 m². The central location is a benefit for electric vehicle users living in the city centre and national transit traffic and tourists. Around 44,000 cars pass the site on the B31 daily, with excellent transport links from all sides. badenova's innovation fund for climate and water protection also supported the project. Since the company was founded, around 1.5 million euros have been channelled from the fund every year into particularly innovative and exemplary projects. The charging park is one of these, as it is a further step towards the energy transition.

Construction took around eight months. Due to supply bottlenecks caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the construction time took longer than expected. The next fast-charging park of a similar type is located in Mahlberg.

City of Freiburg switched to e-mobility early on

Mayor Martin Horn pointed out that the city has had good experiences consistently converting the municipal vehicle fleet to e-mobility. E-cars now account for 80 per cent of the city's car fleet. Along with Elektro Ullmann, badenova has installed 67 charging points for the municipal fleet. «badenova is an important partner for e-mobility and for the energy transition as a whole.» Martin Horn also left no doubt that the construction of e-charging points in Freiburg will continue. There are 144 public charging points in Freiburg - not counting the charging park - a third have been installed by badenova. If you include the 22 public charging points at the Volksbank station and the ten at the SCF stadium, badenova has installed 42 per cent of the charging points. badenova CEO Hans-Martin Hellebrand referred to badenova's wide range of e-mobility services: «E-mobility consulting is much more than 'just' installing a wallbox," he said, adding that the focus is currently on advising local authorities, industry and property managers. The more far-sightedly the topic is viewed as a whole, the faster e-mobility will reach the centre of society.»
